Along with Yuvraj, Dinesh Karthik and Rishab Pant from the previous ODI squads were omitted. Pacer Shardul Thakur, who displayed tremendous show with the ball for Rising Pune Supergiant, has been rewarded for his performance. While he will find it incredibly hard to break into the settled Test side, he must have thought he had a chance of making the ODI squad, especially after his impressive performance in the recently-concluded tri-series in South Africa.
Suresh Raina too has been overlooked by the selectors.
The squad: Virat Kohli (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma (vice-captain), KL Rahul, Manish Pandey, Ajinkya Rahane, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni (wk), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shardul Thakur. He made an impressive comeback, leading India A to a tri- series triumph in South Africa, with 307 runs.
With both spinners, Ashwin and Jadeja given rest, the onus will fall on Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal to take wickets and the duo will be keen to make an impression in Sri Lankan conditions.
KL Rahul and Manish Pandey have found their places back in India's limited-overs squads after the two were included for the five-match ODI and the one-off T20I series against Sri Lanka.
There were rumours that Virat Kohli wouldn't be playing the ODI series but the Indian captain put all those to rest on Friday. The lone T20- I will be played on September 6.
