But Luck said at his press conference today that the XFL has big ambitions and isn't afraid of a big challenge. The XFL announcement press conference back in January lasted about 25 minutes and included an opening statement from McMahon and a Q&A portion at the end.
Luck said the games will feature a shorter play clock compared to the National Football League and conclude in less than three hours. They want fast-paced action with "more ball and less stall". They also want to focus on player health and safety.
They are focusing on shorter games (less than 3 hours), changes to rules with changes to punts, extra points, and more.
"We believe launching in February 2020 gives us the time to get the game, the fan experience and the partnerships right, and we believe we are well on our way", Luck said. Players will be tested for performance-enhancing drugs. Luck also emphasized that they want to keep ticket prices low for families.
Luck said an XFL app is being developed.
"New Jersey couldn't be happier to be one of the eight host sites for the XFL's 2020 revival season", Gov. Phil Murphy said at the news conference.
Luck says they will look for the best coaches and players available and majority will have college and National Football League experience. The league will fully implement gambling in all states where it is legal.
Oliver Luck said that fans can now go to XFL.com and put a deposit down to buy season tickets.
The XFL will begin play in spring 2020. Team names, logos, colors, and players will be announced in the coming weeks and months.
In terms of selecting host cities for the XFL's first season, it was noted that more than 30 cities and venues expressed interest in participating, and that the league was looking for dedicated long-term partners rather than just a buildings to rent.
