Western NY woman drowned her 10-day-old son in bathtub

Markiya Mitchell, 25, faced charges of second-degree murder for allegedly killing her 10-day-old son Jeremiah Mitchell, according to Rochester Police Chief Michael Ciminelli.

On Monday, police responded to a call from an adult about an unresponsive infant and arrived at the home to find Jeremiah Mitchell unconscious in the bathtub. The baby, Jeremiah, was immediately transported to Rochester General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Upon being interviewed by investigators from the Rochester Police Department's Special Victim Investigations, she admitted to intentionally drowning Jeremiah in the bathtub with the goal of ending his life. Police say that Mitchell went to the store to buy cigarettes after she drowned her son.

"The defendant with intent to cause the infant's death left her infant son submerged in the bath water for a period of 1 to 2 hours", read the felony complaint.

Mitchell was scheduled to be arraigned on a second-degree murder charge in Rochester City Court Tuesday morning, where the grand jury may have considered additional charges. Mitchell pleaded not guilty and was ordered held in jail without bail. Nevertheless it is now thought that individual is the child's father who Mitchell had been fighting with. She had just regained custody of the child from CPS.

The 25-year-old woman also has a seven-year-old who is in the care of a relative, police said. She will appear in court Friday at 10:30 a.m. for a preliminary hearing.
