‘Venom’ Launches to $80 Million, ‘A Star Is Born’ Draws $42.6 Million

Say what you want about how underused some of the key cast are in Venom - particularly Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed, who gets precious little in the way of good material to work with - but it was an ingenious move to hire them.

Despite being panned by critics, the movie comfortably broke the October opening weekend record by more than $20 million, according to Box Office Mojo figures. Internationally Venom raked in over $125 million making Venom's total box office gain $205,230,000 after only 3 days! Venom released on October 5th, 2018 and managed to clear over $80 million at the domestic box office during its first weekend.

"Venom" pulled off its big box office success despite some terrible reviews. A lot of ink has been spilled about the power a rotten "Rotten Tomatoes" score has and how damaging it can be to a film's bottom line.

"Venom" and the critically acclaimed "A Star Is Born" were both able to draw effectively from beyond their core audiences.

Warner Bros' A Star is Born, the third remake of the classic 1937 film of the same name, also had a fine debut as well, earning 40 million dollars.

The Little Monsters - fans of Lady Gaga - had reportedly written bad reviews of Venom, recognising its toxic box-office threat to A Star Is Born, which stars the singer and Bradley Cooper.

A Star Is Born hit theaters last week, and it's already generating Oscar buzz.
