Trump attorney says president 'not under investigation'

Sekulow made four TV appearances on Sunday to clarify the situation.

"The President has not been and is not under investigation" for obstruction of justice, he added, referring to press reports saying that special counsel Robert Mueller is also investigating Trump, Efe news reported. "The timing of the thaw, however, has provoked accusations that the president is trying to ingratiate himself with a key member of a congressional panel investigating potential ties between Trump associates and Russian Federation".

The special counsel is looking for evidence to support claims that Trump's associates illegally colluded with Moscow during the president's victorious run for the White House a year ago.

Sekulow said the tweet on Friday was not an admission, it was a reaction.

Attorney Jay Sekulow spoke with Jake Tapper on CNN to attempt to clear up any miscommunication caused by Trump's tweet. Though some in the White House have preached caution, fearing a repeat of the firestorm over Comey's firing, many in Trump's orbit — including his son Donald Trump Jr. and adviser Newt Gingrich — have deemed Mueller biased and worthy of dismissal.

A member of President Donald Trump's outside legal team says the president isn't under federal investigation.

Trump would later fire Comey, saying at first that he had done so on the recommendation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein, but later admitted that he had chose to fire Comey prior to hearing from the Justice Department and that he had done so because of his frustration about the Russian Federation investigation.

Barak Cohen, a former Justice Department lawyer and now a defence attorney specialising in white-collar crime and investigations, said there was no requirement that the special counsel notify Trump he was under investigation, so the lack of such notice meant nothing.

The Post, in fact, states in its article about what it sees as an unlikely alliance, that Rubio's membership on the Senate Intelligence Committee investigating Russian influence in the 2016 presidential race could be a factor.

After those reports, Trump himself had once again resorted to Twitter, where he posted an enigmatic message on Thursday in which he seemed to acknowledge that he was under investigation.

This will likely go on in the same vein for months, with Sekulow and others defending Trump against a very specific charge of obstruction of justice through his firing of Comey. Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said that the panel - overseeing one of several congressional investigations - is looking forward to getting a response from the White House on whether recordings exist.

Sekulow said Trump would address the issue of the tapes - whose very existence is unclear - in the "week ahead". "They're essentially engaging in a scorched-earth litigation strategy that is beginning with trying to discredit the prosecutor". With leaks about the expanding investigation being spoon-fed to anti-Trump media and with Mueller's hiring spree including Democratic donors, the president has reason to suspect he's being set up for a fall.

A U.S. official who is familiar with the rough outlines of the probe and who spoke on condition of anonymity told Reuters on Thursday that Mueller was also examining whether Trump or others tried to interfere with the investigation. Mueller was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and has expansive powers to probe any matters that develop from his initial investigation.
