Trump again blows up a careful White House statement with a tweet

A Washington Post report, citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter, said a senior Trump adviser is now considered a "person of interest" in the law enforcement investigation into whether Trump's campaign associates coordinated with Russian Federation in an effort to sway the 2016 election.

Comey was very apprehensive heading into a dinner with the president in late January, because of his previous encounters with Trump during the transition and immediately after the inauguration, according to one associate. The White House has struggled since Comey's firing to explain the chain of events that led to it and the Justice Department's involvement in that decision. But Senator John Cornyn of Texas said Mueller is perhaps the single most-qualified person to get the facts for the American people.

The top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Mark Warner, said he expects Comey to "shed light on issues critical to this Committee's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election".

Comey turned down an invitation to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Rather, as the great expositor of impeachment - and the Constitution - Alexander Hamilton said, 'We move to impeachment because of the misconduct of public men, the violation of some public trust, and these relate to injuries done to society itself.' And we have certainly seen at least probable cause of that, if not proof of that, as yet.

Trump admitted last week that he fired Comey in part because of the Russian Federation investigation, blowing up the White House message that the firing was based on a Department of Justice recommendation.

The president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson all have acknowledged contacts with Russian officials.

Lavrov says media reported that Trump told him "terrorists are capable of stuffing laptops, all kinds of electronic devices, with untraceable explosive materials", information he says the administration revealed with the laptop ban. After all, I've been writing for more than twelve years now that Democrats have failed to rise to the threat- saying that we have one Party (the Rs) that will make a fight out of anything (even when the nation would be better served by cooperation) and another Party (the Ds) who refuse to fight over anything (even when the nation needs them to press the battle to protect America).

White House spokesman Sean Spicer did not dispute the Times's account.

Burr told reporters Thursday about the response from Flynn's lawyer.

Did he or didn't he?

It immediately escalated the legal stakes - and the potential political damage - for a president who has tried to dismiss the matter as partisan witch hunt and a "hoax".

And I suppose if your name is Donald Trump that part of Bob Mueller's M.O. would bring you a degree of comfort.

At this point, the White House may have overplayed their hand.

He pointed out that "With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special councel (sic) appointed!".

Spicer offered a new explanation for the firing, saying that Trump had been trying to improve relations with Russian Federation - and Comey got in the way.

The immediate show of support from Republicans after the Mueller announcement underscores how eager the conference was to shift attention from the Senate probe and back to the federal investigation.
