"I've been trying to write a Tonya Harding song since I first saw her skate at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in 1991", Stevens wrote in an essay that accompanies the song, which is available for purchase in two version and also on cassette and vinyl.
He goes on to list her accomplishments, her weird life story, and that whole Nancy Kerrigan situation.
Camera IconIce skater Tonya Harding (l) with Nancy Kerrigan avoiding each other during training in Hamar's Olympic Ampitheatre on 17 February 1994. "She was one of the greatest figure skaters of her time, and the first American woman to perform a triple axle in an worldwide competition". Tonya Harding finished eighth.
The ice skater is back in the news as the Margot Robbie starrer I, Tonya opens this weekend.
Before the real-life soap opera unfolded on wall-to-wall news coverage, Harding was noted for her skating prowess. Though she didn't stop for interviews, Harding was definitely the hit of the night, surprising even Robbie's I, Tonya co-stars.
It reminds Robbie, 27, of a time after Suicide Squad opened a year ago and a friend texted her a picture of a youngster on a NY subway vehicle reading a comic featuring Harley Quinn, Robbie's colorful Squad anti-heroine. Sebastian Stan plays Harding's ex-husband Jeff Gillooly in the film, and told People: "I don't know if I should even say "Hi" to [Tonya], I mean, I play Jeff!".
This isn't Stevens first time exploring beauty and sadness in Oregon. Tonya also had a brief career as a boxer, and is most famous for her bout with former Arkansas state employee Paula Jones (whose sexual harassment suit against Bill Clinton precipitated his impeachment in 1998).
Harding was stripped of her 1994 US Championship title, fined $US160,000 ($212,000) and forced to serve 500 hours of community service.
