He's the first Miami-area finalist for the award since Jeff McInnis made the so-called shortlist in 2013 after helping found Yardbird Southern Table & Bar in 2013.
The winners will be unveiled at the foundation's annual gala May 7 in Chicago.

The foundation, which moves its announcement city from year to year, chose Philadelphia after a solid showing in last year's awards.
Other female New Yorkers to be named finalists for the 2018 culinary awards include restaurant designers Amy Morris, Anna Polonsky, Julie Nerenberg, Paulette Cole, Amny Ilias and Maya Nakano. Killeen, along with her late husband George Germon, are the only local chefs to have ever won a James Beard Foundation Award.

Winners in broadcast and cookbook categories will be announced on April 27 in New York City.
