Members of the US Congress took part in the traditional Republicans vs Democrats baseball game on Thursday, with many wearing hats to honour Steve Scalise, the congressman who was critically wounded by a gunman as his team practised a day before.
Congressman Steve Scalise remains in critical condition following surgery to fix injuries sustained after he was shot at a congressional baseball practice Wednesday, hospital officials announced in a statement on Thursday evening.
"The bullet travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding".
Interest in the charity baseball game has skyrocketed in the aftermath of the shooting, as staffers and lawmakers look to rally around Scalise and the three others who were shot: a congressional staffer, a lobbyist and a Capitol Police special agent.
The hospital also said that Scalise had received "multiple units of blood transfusion" and that he would require additional operations.
Hodgkinson, a Belleville, Illinois, home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park, had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.
The annual tradition of the game took on new significance after a gunman shot Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise and four others at a Wednesday practice for the game in Alexandria, Va. But Trump went on to say that "Because of him and the tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring - and he's having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought - our country will perhaps become closer, more unified, so important".
Richmond and others in both parties say Scalise will be at the top of their minds.
