SpaceX launch and landing in California

SpaceX was also aiming to land its Falcon 9 rocket after successful deployment of the satellite.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter to warn Californians what was in store for them. The launch was historic as Space-X brought the lst stage booster back to Vandenberg next to the launch pad the payload has left less than 20 minutes earlier. The area, known as Landing Zone 4, or LZ-4, is famous for being home to countless Titan missile launches during the U.S. Space Program's infancy.

"This is great news for everyone here at SpaceX", Tom Praderio, a SpaceX firmware engineer, said during live launch commentary tonight.

SAOCOM 1B is planned to launch next year.

Mr Musk is the chief executive officer, chairman and largest shareholder of both SpaceX and Tesla, two companies that are pushing frontiers of technology while surrounded by different degrees of drama.

The night sky is lit up above Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., during the launch.

Saocom-1A has an L-band payload created to study soil moisture for agriculture, disaster monitoring and scientific research. The mission will also help planners and emergency-management officials keep tabs on wildfires, floods and other disasters. It's the 30th successful landing of a rocket booster. CONAE will operate the satellite as part of the Argentine-Italian System of Satellites with the Italian Space Agency, coordinating observations with Italy's four Cosmo-Skymed X-band SAR satellites.

The feat was achieved on Sunday evening as the company launched an earth-imaging commercial satellite for Argentina called SAOCOM 1A.

Its name is short for Satelite Argentino de Observacion Con Microondas.
