The Czech Republic beat Switzerland 3-1 to advance to its 10th straight Fed Cup semifinals on Sunday, and Serena Williams played her first competitive match in more than a year as defending champion United States defeated the Netherlands 3-1.
"I honestly feel better than I thought I was going to feel", she told reporters after the match.
Serena Williams may make jaws drop when she plays tennis, but her adorable baby daughter Alexis Olympia is making hearts melt on the court. I feel like that's a very good step in the right direction.' When asked to elaborate on what she felt she had to improve in her game, she noted, 'I'm always a 360 kind of person.
Serena is already trying to get her baby girl interested in tennis, and she even recently shared a snap of Alexis with her first ever mini tennis racket. Williams said she hadn't known what to expect Sunday and acknowledged she needs to improve in all aspects, but she added that "I feel like I'm on the right track".
"I didn't manage my time well", she said. "I've been training and it was just exciting to be out there", she said.
But in Williams's eyes, the match was simply a necessary starting point - both of the "long process" of regaining the form that will allow her to collect more Grand Slam titles, and of a new phase in her career. Maybe that's why I felt like I did better.
"I think she's going to be fine", Haarhuis said.
The Dutch players' ability to soak up the pressure was all the more remarkable given that Schuurs, the younger of the pair, was just six-years-old when Serena won her first Major tournament.
But shortly after, the owner on an Open-era record 23 grand slam singles titles drew wild cheers when she confidently stepped to the net and stretched out to drive home a superb backhand volley.
