SEYMOUR, IN- An early morning crash has shut down Interstate 65 in southern Indiana.
The crash involved three semi trucks on I-65 southbound near mile marker 43 and eventually resulted in the closure of both southbound and northbound lanes.
One of the semis was hauling hazardous material.
Homes within a half mile of the area are being evacuated as a precaution.
Indiana State Police said Wednesday afternoon that traffic was moving again on Interstate 80/94 in Gary after the shutdown, which left some motorists stuck for hours.
I-65 North reopened just after 3 p.m. Wheeles said crews responding to the cleanup faced an "explosion risk". ISP says that the detour is sending traffic to US 31 south to State Road 250 and back on I-65 at mile marker 41.
"Something inside that trailer ruptured, which caused the chemicals to leak", Wheeles said. Wheeles said the person's injuries appeared to be minor. "It didn't take long then for the trailer and the tractor to catch fire". Southbound will remain closed for an indefinite amount of time.
The fire destroyed a vehicle from Indiana Spill Response and damaged the asphalt.
