It's been nearly a week since 3-year-old Sherin Mathews went missing after being left outside by her father as punishment for not drinking her milk. An SUV taken from her family's home is now front and center in the investigation.
"We have information that the Mathews' 2013 maroon Acura MDX SUV was absent from their residents on Sunningdale between the hours of 4 a.m.to 5 a.m. on Saturday October 7th", Richardson Police Department said in a Facebook post Thursday.
NBC 11Alive reports that Wesley Mathews reportedly put his daughter, Sherin Mathews, in the family home's backyard as a form of punishment when she refused to drink her milk earlier that evening.
"We are wanting people and businesses within a 30 minute drive from their home to check their video systems to see if they may have picked up a 2013 Maroon Acura MDX SUV on their system", Sgt. Kevin Perilich told the Daily News.
Her father, Wesley Mathews, was arrested Saturday on a charge of abandoning or endangering a child and was released from custody late Sunday after posting $250,000 bail but is required to wear an electronic monitoring device and surrender his passport as part of the conditions of his bond. Sherin's mother, Sini Mathews, spoke through her attorney on Wednesday and said she still hopes for her daughter's return.
Detectives won't say whether Mathews is a suspect, but they have cleared his wife Sini Mathews. At 3 am, he asked her to stand near a tree outside the house as punishment for not drinking milk.
Mathews claimed when he went to check on her around 3:15 a.m. she was gone.
After five hours, Wesley Mathews called the authorities. He was released on Dollars 250,000 bond late Sunday night, Sgt. Kevin Perlich said.
Investigators say she was adopted two years ago from an orphanage in India. She was in the house at the time, but was reportedly asleep and unaware of what her husband was doing, Perlich said. "That does not seem like a normal response that one would do if you have a missing child". "I don't know what happened".
The police are now on the look out for any possible video footage that might have captured the movement of the vehicle.
The 4-year-old daughter has also been removed from couple's home by the Child Protective Services.
CBS DFW reports that the Wesleys are no longer cooperating with law enforcement.
Sherin stands 3 feet tall and weighs around 22 pounds. According to investigators, Sherin "suffers from developmental issues and has limited verbal communication skills".
