Raiders rookie Gareon Conley ruled out for the season

Unfortunately, the team's pass defense remains a work in progress and first round pick Gareon Conley, a cornerback out of Ohio State, played in only 2 games before being shut down for the season.

Conley had a strong game early in the season against the New York Jets, but hurt the shin and came out of the game against Washington the following week with a limp.

"It's just people's bodies are different, when you have those type injuries, you wait and see if it can heal and feel better and good enough to play early in the season", general manager Reggie McKenzie said last week. "But we're going to give him every opportunity to see if he can do it". If he can't go, then he can't go.

Conley played 92 defensive snaps and five special teams snaps in two games, making seven tackles and one pass breakup. They face Tom Brady and the Patriots in Mexico City on Sunday.

With Conley sidelined, the Raiders have struggled again in the secondary with starter David Amerson missing time with injuries and Sean Smith having his playing time reduced because of ineffectiveness.

Latham, a second-year defensive lineman from IN, was suspended four games by the NFL on October 9 for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Briefly: Cincinnati linebacker Vontaze Burfict won't be suspended for the contact with an official that got him ejected from a 24-20 loss at Tennessee on Sunday. "But he is a good football player and he will have a great career".

ESPN's Field Yates first reported the news. Cleveland starting linebacker Jamie Collins is done for the season with a sprained right knee ligament. In recent years they'd added plenty of rookies and veterans alike, including a couple high draft investments meant to anchor the unit for years to come.
