Raiders giving 10-year deal to Gruden

Hair thinner than 20 years ago. Now that the tuck rule has been repealed, perhaps Gruden will get another shot at the Patriots in the upcoming years.

Mark Davis had finally reeled in his big fish - "Jon Gruden is Mark Davis's white whale", said Howie Long - and the Raiders did everything possible to make Gruden's (second) Alameda introduction a grand spectacle. "I want you", Gruden told Carr on the ESPN show.

It was a trade that would alter the course for the Oakland Raiders.

The NFL is concluding a turbulent season that saw the continuation of pregame demonstrations during the national anthem, including by a number of Raiders players, to protest police violence against minorities that divided many fans and earned the ire of President Donald Trump.

Gruden didn't entirely throw Jack Del Rio or Todd Downing under the bus for the ex-coach's ill-advised switch from Bill Musgrave to Downing last offseason, or Downing's failure to build a competent scheme for Derek Carr.

While a 10-year contract is unheard of in the NFL, Davis is banking on Gruden to be successful with the franchise...literally. Whoever it is, they'll embark on a mission with Gruden who has "unfinished business" with the Raiders. I think you have to monitor it.

"Reggie and I come from the same tree in Green Bay", Gruden says. I love the players that play it. "That's what is going to unlock the greatness in him".

Davis said he "got close" four times since 2011 to getting Gruden to return, but each time Gruden chose to stay in ESPN's Monday Night Football booth. Not only did the organization feel a loss but the players did to. "As a coach, I've been traded. You're going to sign for $100 million dollars, to me, in the next four years a Super Bowl championship is something that I should be able to expect from you".

Even if there is some skepticism regarding how much of the contract is fully guaranteed, the fact that coaches' contracts are typically guaranteed leads you to assume at least a large percentage of the deal is rock-solid, making it an unheard-of contract for a football coach. He's just that type of coach, very inspirational. I'm going to do everything I can.

Davis said he had been trying to bring Gruden back for six years ever since taking over the franchise following his father's death. The excitement in today's press conference was felt among all who attended.

In this case, the comments from Davis confirm that the Raiders necessarily violated the Rooney Rule because a pair of minority candidates interviewed for a job that was never actually open. Oakland A's manager Bob Melvin arrive for the Jon Gruden presser.

On the season, Lynch's 50 missed tackles forced were the sixth most of any running back in the NFL, per Pro Football Focus. "You're responsible for your actions, and we'll talk about that at length with our team". That was alcohol on the wound and the Raiders wouldn't recover until the 2016 season. "If he just takes advantage of it, there are so many great things in store". Without a doubt this journey won't be easy but Gruden's up for the challenge. I think he has a huge upside. No matter what our record is, we've got to continually find ways to improve.

"We need to get through this day, lock the doors and get to work", he said. We have got to improve our roster, no question. Who is available when we pick? Expect a joint effort on decisions to add assets via free agency and the draft wherever necessary.
