A 4G VoLTE (Voice over LTE) feature phone from Reliance Industries Limited is soon to be unveiled in India. This feature phone also supports Bluetooth 4.1, video calling feature and Global Positioning System.
Clearly, Jio's main intention is to add as many as features in the feature phone. The device will be able to run apps like Jio TV, Jio Cinema. While the news source makes a guess that the feature phone might be powered by a Spreadtrum processor it is sure that the phone has 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. Today we have managed to catch a glimpse of the aforementioned feature phone thanks to an anonymous tipster who got in touch with a technology blog called Technology Personalized.
This new move will be another major disruption after Reliance Jio's mega launch of Jio 4G services back in September a year ago. The feature phone runs on KAI OS which will support these WiFi features and VoLTE. But to be fair, the price at which it's being offered, Jio's 4G feature phone does not even have to.
Based on the rumour mills, the 4G feature phone will be running on KAI OS which apparently is a forked version of FireOS. We are sceptical of these claims as both the Jio apps have been developed for touch interfaces and we aren't sure if they have optimised the apps for tis feature phone.
A report from Reliance indicates that its 4G service already has 120 million subscribers since the launch of its low-priced 4G service under the Jio banner, which the tremendous growth of which eventually slowed down in the past few months. Interestingly, this Reliance Jio 4G phone, basic as it is, will also offer a 2MP camera on the back, as well as a front camera (VGA).
- The phone essentially has an all-plastic candy-bar body design with a textured back.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is likely to meet all telcos on July 21 to discuss minimum floor price for voice and data tariff in the country, as it has been demanded by some operators. Reliance is holding its annual general meeting (AGM), where the company is expected to announce the phone.
The website has since been taken down. The Navi Mumbai police had already been acting on the complaint registered by one of Reliance Jio's customers. But even if the company is working on a 4G-enabled feature phone, it will be a big deal for millions of users.
