Police plan major security for Australia cities this New Year's Eve

Forty hours ahead of the launch of the first fireworks heralding the arrival of 2018, the first of this year's New Year revellers began securing their spots around Sydney Harbour to ensure they won't miss the world-famous pyrotechnic display.

Local radio personality Jason "Max Man" MacDonald, who was also spotted at Centre 200, said his New Year's Eve plans included both the Screaming Eagles game and an evening of ringing in 2018 at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre.

In its editorial, the Gulf News said that the authorities have, across the country, put in every single measure to enable the celebrations to be conducted in an absolutely safe manner.

Due to the different time zones around the world, people saw the clock strike midnight on New Year's Eve at different times in various cities.

In Adelaide, revellers in Glenelg and the CBD were treated to fireworks displays at 9pm and midnight.

In Paris hundreds of thousands of partygoers braved a storm warning and drizzle to line the Champs-Elysees avenue before a dazzling light show and a fireworks display lit up the Arc de Triomphe. There are several penalties for shooting fireworks in Benton on New Year's Eve. In Cologne itself, some 1,400 police will be mobilized, street lighting will be improved and more video cameras installed.

Well if you head to Tweed Heads in northern NSW for New Year's then you can do just that. But with no major attack in France since mid-2016, the atmosphere was noticeably more festive than in the past two years. Here in the USA, many events are set to occur under heightened security, including in Las Vegas, which is still reeling from the deadliest mass shooting in the nation's modern history three months ago.
