Palace pin hopes on Hodgson for fortune revival

Roy Hodgson failed to inspire the Eagles in his debut outing as new manager and they sit rooted to the base of the Premier League with zero points.

"We've handicapped ourselves by not taking any points in the first four games", he said.

"We controlled the ball and that is something that we need because we have the quality of players to keep the ball and dominate the game".

The win hands Mauricio Pellegrino his first away win since he took charge on the south coast, while Hodgson faces an uphill battle to turn Palace's form around, especially with their next three matches pitting them against Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.

The former Lazio man handled the threat of Benteke well and always seemed to be in the right position, while there were a few glimpses of his distribution skills with a handful of terrific left-footed passes from the back. I mean that in a nice way because he gets results playing that way. The players care and they hurt and you couldn't say they weren't trying. "It's going to be a long road and there might be some more pain before we see some light at the end of the tunnel".

Okay, now I'm getting anxious that we're playing so well, but only 1 goal up. They did that but after about ten minutes, that game was again [going] for us. He formed a strong relationship with Ashworth, who would later follow him to the Football Association, and the two worked closely on player recruitment. He's played his first team and got a defeat under his belt.

If you are at a smaller club, you understand that if you are going to survive in the Premier League it has to be a team effort. It was interesting interviewing James Morrison a few years ago and hearing the Scotland worldwide, who is not the sort of person to say things just for the sake of it, talk so highly of Hodgson. What Hodgson does will work - it is just a question of how quickly.

- Southampton have won four of their last five meetings with Crystal Palace in all competitions, losing the other.

"I was lucky to manage Barcelona with many outstanding performances but this week has been a lot of goals", said manager Pep Guardiola.
