OR primary: Dems hopeful, GOP chooses gov candidate

U.S. Rep. Bob Brady, who now represents the old 1st District that includes portions of the new 5th District, will not seek re-election.

For true political junkies the evening of May 15 will offer a steady stream of returns, with polls closing at 8:00 p.m. EDT in Pennsylvania; 8:00 p.m. CDT in Nebraska, 8:00 p.m. MDT in Idaho, and (for the most part) 8:00 p.m. PDT in Oregon. If he's beaten, Lt. Gov. Mike Stack would become the first officeholder to lose re-election since Pennsylvania allowed lieutenant governors to run for a second term in the 1970s. Wolf previous year ordered an investigation into the treatment of state employees, including state police troopers, by Stack and his wife.

Four Democrats are competing for their party's nomination.

"We have a booth set up in our lobby where people can fill out their ballot and then drop it off in the box right outside our office", said Jeff Doty, the county's election supervisor. Chuck Eddy is challenging Barr in the Republican primary.

Three Democrats are running for their party's nomination. The sleepier Republican contest for U.S. Senate could play a role come November in deciding whether Republicans maintain U.S. Senate control.

The primary will also decide nominees in races for lieutenant governor, the U.S. House and state legislative races.

Six incumbents - Democrats Mike Doyle of Pittsburgh and Brendan Boyle and Dwight Evans of Philadelphia and Republicans Brian Fitzpatrick of Bucks County, Tom Marino of Lycoming County and Lloyd Smucker of Lancaster County - are facing primary challenges.

Polls have opened in Pennsylvania as voters choose Republican challengers to Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf and U.S. Sen.

The Republican candidate is likely to win in this R+34 state, but the Democratic primary might prove quite revealing.

Republicans held a 13-5 advantage in the delegation after the 2016 election.

We laid out, in tedious detail, the reason why you should vote in this election in Monday's editorial. In February, the state Supreme Court redrew the districts after ruling in a gerrymandering case that Republicans who controlled state government in 2011 had unconstitutionally drawn the districts to benefit their party's candidates. Two of the measures southern OR will vote on include school bonds for the Medford School District and Grants Pass School District.
