National Hockey League approves Seattle team backed by billionaire Bonderman for 2021 season

The only winter professional sports franchise in the city, Seattle's hockey team joins a crowded landscape that includes the NFL's Seahawks, MLB's Mariners and the Sounders of Major League Soccer.

The NHL announced Seattle will get a team in 2021. The fact that an ownership group headed by David Bonderman and Hollywood film producer Jerry Bruckheimer paid $150 million more in expansion fees than what Vegas paid two years ago also didn't hurt.

Someone in charge of explaining the Seattle arena construction timeline to National Hockey League officials recently said in order to make the deadline of an opening by October 2020, all construction, legal and political matters would have to go perfectly.

Tippett could feel the excitement building when he was back in Arizona over the Thanksgiving holiday, noting that people told him on the golf course they hoped Seattle would get a team.

But does it have a hockey fanbase?

Judging on early graphics created by the NHL Seattle group, it appears that the new team will use red and black as its colors.

A change in division will now see the Phoenix-based club come up against the Nashville Predators, the new Winnipeg Jets and frequent trade partners the Chicago Blackhawks.

Arizona's arrival could help the 'Hawks as there aren't too many bottom feeder teams like Arizona in the central (only the St. Louis Blues have less points), however the Coyotes aren't to be overlooked as they have some young pieces with potential.

Seattle President Tod Leiweke expects the arena to be ready and open in March or April of 2021.

Flyers goaltending prospect Carter Hart played for the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League, located 25 miles north of Seattle.

She was accompanied by Jaina Goscinski, 11, a Washington Wild girls' hockey player in a league run by her mother, Kelly. "I actually think it was at the end of the day the simplest, most logical, least disruptive option we had available to us and I think it will work well for the Coyotes".

"The plan is to have a team in place for 2020", Bettman said in October, after the board's executive committee voted 9-0 to move forward with Seattle.

From the beginning, everything about this expansion bid has followed an inevitable path to its US$650 million conclusion.

As CEO Tod Leiweke said, "That's when we all knew that this was the right idea".

So with that said, here are some options that are getting a lot of attention on social media, good and bad.

"Of course, everyone on the East Coast is so shocked to hear that Seattle won the first American Stanley Cup, " she said.

A three-quarters vote of the current 31 owners is needed to confirm Seattle as the league's newest franchise. Virtually no one will be willing to take on a player like that now knowing that they will need to protect them over other defensemen when the time comes.
