N. Korea urges United States to agree to declare end to Korean War

Earlier this month, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned Russia, China and other countries against any violation of global sanctions on North Korea that could reduce pressure on the North to abandon its nuclear weapons.

North Korea reiterated its demand Thursday for the United States to agree to declare an end to the 1950-53 Korean War, saying that it would help bring in peace and create mutual trust. The station had been used to test major long-range ballistic missiles and satellites.

In an April summit, President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un agreed to seek such declaration this year through three-way meetings involving the two Koreas and the United States or four-way talks involving the two Koreas, the USA and China. In February 2016, the North launched its Gwangmyeongsong-4 satellite at the site, a month after the fourth nuclear test, according to Hankyoreh.

It continued: "Now, the issue in question is that going against the intention of President Trump to advance the DPRK - US relations, some high level officials within the US administration are making baseless allegations against us and making desperate attempts at intensifying the worldwide sanctions and pressure".

At Trump and Kim's historic summit, the two signed a document stating that Pyongyang would work toward "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

"The U.S. should, even at this belated time, respond to our honest efforts in a corresponding manner", North Korea added in its statement.

"They have to understand that the worldwide community still expects them to denuclearize and so we're willing to wait if they want to wait, but we're not willing to wait for too long", said Haley, who has pushed through three United Nations sanctions packages since arriving at the world body 18 months ago.

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri travelled this week to Iran, where President Hassan Rowhani told him the United States could not be trusted after the Trump administration reneged on a 2015 deal to lift sanctions in return for curbs on Iran's own nuclear programme.

South and North Korea technically remain at war as the Korean War ended only with the armistice treaty.

Earlier this month, August 3, the USA mission to the UN submitted proposals to the UN Security Council suggesting new sanctions against North Korea.

The summit held in Singapore marked the first time Kim Jong-un had met a western leader.
