Mukul Roy quits TMC; resigns from Rajya Sabha

Suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mukul Roy on Wednesday resigned from party posts and his Rajya Sabha membership. We had elected Mamata Banerjee as the leader but we are comrades of the party and not servants.

Mukul Roy had been a close aide to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Responding to Mukul Roy's statements, education minister Partha Chatterjee said the party was relieved after Roy quit and his rants have no meaning for the leadership. For Trinamool, Atal Behari Vajpai and LK Advani are non-communal and Narendra Modi and Amit Shah are communal. After handing his resignation letter to Vice-President and Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu in New Delhi he interacted with mediapersons and said that he could not work as a servant of a one-man party.

Indicating the possibility of him joining the BJP, Roy espoused the history of ties between BJP and TMC. Mamata Banerjee is our role model. He also met Finance Minister Arun Jaitley last week.

Roy, who was suspended for six years for "anti-party activities" by the Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress following his September 25 announcement that he would resign after Durga Puja, also said that he had never considered the Bharatiya Janata Party a "communal party". He is largely responsible for the expansion of Trinamool Congress in West Bengal and in the country.

Without naming Banerjee, he said dynastic politics in the party is one of the main reasons for him to leave it. "If he was intelligent, he would not have taken such a decision to betray the party", he alleged. Many in the party had begun to question what he had told CBI.

On the issue of scams allegedly involving TMC leaders, Roy said "it is not possible for Banerjee to know what her leaders are doing at the individual level".

Earlier, there were also reports that the leader had been meeting BJP leaders. "Please wait for a few days", Roy had recently said. "I have no option except leaving one-man party", he said. If so then why he did not raise this when he was not an MP? "He quit because he wanted to run the party like a zamindar (landlord) but could not", he added. "All of us are colleagues and Mamata is our leader without whose name we are nobody". "But, if he (Roy) is found guilty in the Narada and Saradha cases, we will not induct him into the party", the BJP leader said. "He should look at his own backyard before speaking on dynastic politics". "Is it not a sign of dynastic culture?"

"He is a good organiser". "We had formed TMC to fight against the Congress".
