Mercedes-Benz Stadium opening pushed back, to August

Bad news for Atlanta United fans: The new Mercedes-Benz Stadium won't be ready in July due to construction delays, the team's website announced. Falcons owner Arthur Blank told the Associated Press that the there are no concerns about the "operability" of the stadium's roof, but that the issue involves the timeline of associated steelwork. "That's the bottom line", Steve Cannon, CEO of AMB Group, said in a statement.

Two more matches-against Minnesota United on August 13 and the LA Galaxy on August 19-are being rescheduled for later, undetermined dates at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The new $1.4 billion, 71,000-seat arena features a mechanized canopy system created to reduce capacity for soccer, though small numbers at the gate haven't been an issue for Atlanta United at the Georgia Tech football stadium. But Georgia Tech needs the stadium back in August, which is forcing Atlanta United to postpone two home games scheduled for August until later in the MLS season.

Even so, Cannon said the demolition of the Georgia Dome will be put on hold as an insurance policy until a certificate of occupancy is granted for the new stadium.

Stay on topic - This helps keep the thread focused on the discussion at hand. The Georgia Dome field has already been removed, as well as other equipment that would have to be returned so that the Falcons could play there, according to USA Today.

The roof, contrary to rumors stating otherwise, is well on its way to being complete.

The Cardinals will open the National Football League season in the Hall of Fame Game against the Cowboys in Canton, Ohio.

No changes have been made to the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic games scheduled over Labor Day weekend.

"Yes, we have a complex design and we have a complex building", Cannon said.

Atlanta United FC fans will have to wait a little bit longer to step inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The Georgia Dome was officially closed March 5 after a Monster Jam trucks show.

The new date and time for Minnesota United at Atlanta United is yet to be announced.

Atlanta United will not be able to open Mercedes-Benz Stadium in July.

"I don't think (that space) will be useable for us", he said.

In the revised schedule, Atlanta United's first home date at the new stadium will be on September 9 against Dallas.
