Mattel's Ken Doll Follows Barbie With a Full Makeover

The latest Ken dolls will feature nine different hairstyles, seven skin types and three body types - "slim", "original" and "broad".

It was just a matter of time after Barbie got a politically correct makeover that her friend Ken would follow suit.

All will be available by the holidays.

Some of the new $9.99 Ken dolls were available in select shops and online stores Tuesday, Mattel said, but will be widely available July 8. In its broadest Ken expansion to date, Mattel has introduced 15 realistic Ken dolls that more closely resemble the dorks you come across on Tinder. Mattel will also diversify Ken's look with six new molded hairstyles (including cornrows and an on-trend man bun) as well as a total of seven skin tones.

The dolls join the 100 plus diverse looks that the Barbie brand launched in the last three years with its Barbie Fashionista line. According to their report, there will be 15 new dolls in total, but only 10 will be released today.

Jokes aside, the the Ken remake is certainly a good thing, part of Mattel's push to reflect diversity and appeal to today's kids with a range of body types and styles.

Ken has had some minor changes over the years (remember beard-growing Shaving Fun Ken?), but this marks his first major update in 56 years.

Imagine the look on Barbie's face when she sees that her beloved Ken now rocks a man bun.

The El Segundo, California-based company also announced new Barbie looks Tuesday, including one with a almost shaved head and another with an Afro. Mattel's portfolio of global consumer brands includes American Girl®, Barbie®, Fisher-Price®, Hot Wheels®, Monster High® and Thomas & Friends™, among many others.
