Mariners lose again on Angels' late runs

Reliever Casey Lawrence allowed two runs in the seventh inning, and Tony Zych allowed three more in the eighth inning.

Paxton (undisclosed) was removed from Thursday's outing against the Angels with an apparent injury and left the field with the Mariners' training staff, Shannon Drayer of reports. With J.C. Ramirez set to face Erasmo Ramirez in the pitching matchup, the over/under now sits at 9 runs.

"We just know at some point we're going to get the ball every night", Middleton said. "We've got to find a way to finish games". The game is really never over for us.

From Rotoworld: Ramirez fell to 10-10 after giving up six runs in seven innings Monday against the Orioles. Calhoun picked up the ball on the warning track and fired to Simmons, whose relay to the plate was easily in time to nail Alonso.

The Mariners opened the scoring in the third after Martin led off with a walk.

Back-to-back doubles by Robinson Cano and Cruz to lead off the sixth resulted in another run.

Cron, who had moved to third on the groundout, scored when Kaleb Cowart, the No. 9 batter in the lineup, hit a grounder to Alonso at first base. Ramirez leapt and the ball bounced off his glove. Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager had RBI singles, and Seager made it 3-1 with a solo homer in the fifth inning.

Ramirez struggled in a losing effort against the Royals on Sunday, surrendering five runs on eight hits over his five frames.

Former designated hitter Edgar Martinez, right, speaks during a ceremony retiring his No. 11 as former teammates Jamie Moyer, left, Dan Wilson, Jay Buhner and Ken Griffey Jr. look on before a baseball game between the Mariners and Los Angeles Angels Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, in Seattle. "It's not the first time (for a comeback)", Pujols said. He spent a brief stint on the disabled list back in May due to a strained left forearm, but with just over a month and a half left to go this season, one more DL stint could spell the end of a shot at the playoffs for Seattle. Bailey was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in three appearances before being sidelined. Andrew Moore was called up from Triple-A to take Paxton's spot in the rotation.

The teams play again at 6 p.m., as Erasmo Ramirez (4-4, 5.10) pitches for Seattle opposite JC Ramirez (10-10, 4.21). In his career, Miranda is 4-0 with a 2.61 ERA and 19 strikeouts against the Angels.
