Labour MP reveals he is HIV positive in Commons

Half of people who are HIV positive have faced discrimination, a new poll suggests.

Mr Russell-Moyle is the second MP to ever announce he has HIV as a member of parliament, but the first to make the revelation while speaking in the Commons.

The minister said HIV self-test kits would be availed in pharmacies and online for purchase through smart phones or internet in order to boost people's willingness to participate in HIV interventions.

37 million people worldwide are infected with HIV - but numbers are relatively small in the UK.

Free HIV testing and other health screenings will be available at the event.

TCE Field Officers and volunteers build relationships with communities to provide access to HIV testing in hard-to-reach areas and among the at-risk populations.

On the stigma surrounding HIV, Russell-Moyle added: "Of course there are low level elements of stigma in every day life, in terms of just lack of knowledge, people reacting with guttural reaction". They are connected with healthcare providers to improve treatment uptake, and TCE Field Officers undertake follow-up services at the peoples homes.

He said: "We now know of cases of young men who have tried to gain access to PrEP, who have been turned away and who have subsequently contracted HIV".

"Although we do care for clients with HIV that have been referred from elsewhere, we haven't had a local positive test result since 2016".

HIV incidence among adults aged 15-49 had reduced from 0.35 percent in 2010 to 0.19 percent in 2017, possibly due to various prevention and treatment programmes.

The Senate approved a bill on Wednesday to extend the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) for five years and sent it to the White House for Trump's signature. In 2017, over 3,000 college students tested positive, many of them (81.8%) acquiring the virus through same sex relations.

It also includes men who have sex with men, transgender people, prisoners and the sexual partners of these people.
