KU center Udoka Azubuike to miss Big 12 Tournament with injury

After losing four straight games toward the end of the regular season, Texas Tech is beginning to look more like the team that had challenged Kansas for much of the Big 12 schedule.

The Horned Frogs led during most of the game Thursday in Kansas City at the Big 12 Tournament against Kansas State, but TCU's woes from the free throw hampered the team in its 66-64 overtime loss.

Kansas had the biggest lead in the game with an advantage of 16 at one point.

"What's disappointing to me is we played the second half (like) it was more important to them than us".

In a statement, Jayhawks coach Bill Self said Azubuike was hurt in a scrimmage. They've done everything we've asked.

Kansas State was led by Makol Mawien, who scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds on the afternoon.

For Kansas State, the win should provide a major boost.

The Wildcats beat TCU in an overtime thriller earlier Thursday. The forward is scoring just shy of 17 per game. "We wanted to execute, have fun and be tough". "I'll sleep well this week knowing that if anybody who watched our team play, hard to deny we're a pretty damn good team and worthy of the tournament and can have success against anybody". "We've proven that all season long", Smith said. "I obviously expected us to keep winning and hopefully have a chance to get a 1 seed or 2 seed or up in that range". That should give the Jayhawks confidence if he misses any NCAA Tournament games.

"We showed we can play without Doke", Mykhailiuk said. "We can still win".

As Oklahoma State forward Cameron McGriff flew by to collect his sixth offensive rebound, Oklahoma's Jamuni McNeace just shook his head.

TCU fought back and threatened to win several times behind 20 points and 10 rebounds from Kenrich Williams.

That's when the Jayhawks finally caught fire, going on an 18-4 charge to turn things around. Of those 19, 12 came in the first half, helping build a 39-28 OSU lead.

With three seconds remaining in the half, the Bears drew within three, but senior point guard Jevon Carter swished a half court buzzer beater to send West Virginia into the locker room with a 29-23 lead.Baylor started the second half on a 4-0 spurt to get back within two, but West Virginia did not flinch. A team that has fought and scrapped all through February and into March was playing its second game in fewer than 24 hours.

With 15 minutes left against Kansas, the Cowboys' legs looked shot.

But the KU offense hit a cold patch, managing just two field goals over the next 10 minutes of game action.

Kansas won in a blow out game against Kansas State on Friday, 83-67.

"I didn't expect to be in that position", Oklahoma guard Trae Young said. "We put ourselves in that scenario and Kansas earned the right to have the extra day of rest".

"In practice yesterday, Udoka sprained his medial collateral ligament in his left knee during a scrimmage situation", Self said. Why did this season's edition of Sooner basketball become so bad over such a prolonged period after starting out as one of the top success stories in college basketball? It was a big shot for himself and the team.

The Texas Longhorns will have to sweat out Selection Sunday.
