In a possible sign that the Florida Keys have not fully recovered from Hurricane Irma in September, Monroe County - which typically has the state's lowest unemployment rate - had a 3.7 percent rate in January, behind five counties.
Over-the-year, nonfarm payroll employment increased by 47,100 jobs with the largest gains in these industry sectors in January: Manufacturing (20,200); Leisure and Hospitality (13,900); and Education and Health Services (6,200). The department says the state's rate of unemployment has been below 4 percent for 26 consecutive months, which is the longest stretch since the current methodology was put in place in 1976. California added more than 400,000 jobs while Texas added more than 240,000.
During the fourth quarter, unemployment rate among people aged between 15-29 years dropped to 24.6 percent from 26 percent a year earlier. According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland added 14,600 private sector jobs over-the-month, an increase of 0.7 percent, with notable job gains across multiple sectors.
"Based on headlines we've seen related to the recent federal tax reform, it will be interesting to watch how businesses' reaction to the tax cut translates into jobs numbers in the months ahead". That's the case with Vermont's latest unemployment report.
The only category with a year-over-year decline was "other services" at 1,700 jobs.
Employment in educational and health services increased by 3,000.
Most of 2017 brought good news for Flagler County on the unemployment front, with employment rising by about 1,300, the labor force adding about 1,000 working-age people, and unemployment falling by about 700 overall. Alaska had the highest, at 7.3 percent. This compares with 351,959 in December and 386,875 in January of a year ago.
