Indian girl Sherin Mathew's foster father charged with her murder in US

Wesley Mathews, 37, was also charged in Dallas County with abandoning a child and tampering with evidence. They can either forfeit their parental rights, or the court will decide to schedule a civil trial to possibly terminate their rights.

Sherin was reported missing by her family on October 7 around 8 a.m.

Sherin Mathews was reported missing by her father in October past year, who had at the time said he left her outside their house as punishment for not drinking her milk.

Her adopted father, Wesley Mathews, originally said she disappeared after he put her outside as a punishment.

India's consul-general in Houston, Anupam Ray, said: "Wesley and Sini will face trial".

Dr. Susan Dakil, a pediatrician certified in child-abuse pediatrics, testified that X-rays revealed multiple fractures in Sherin's arms and legs. "We do want to make sure that justice is done, on behalf of this little three year old", says DA Johnson. "We were never going to forget Sherin", he said. Because of the way the injuries had healed, Dakil said, she was confident that the injuries happened after her adoption.

In November, a paediatric doctor confirmed at a custody hearing that she had contacted Child Protective Services in March over concerns with bone fractures she found on three-year-old Sherin. "May she rest in peace", Ray told PTI.

The medical examiner ruled Sherin, who was from India, died from homicidal violence but did not release additional details, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.

A non-profit USA agency involved in placing Sherin Mathews with an Indian-American family has said it followed all national and worldwide laws and best practices during the adoption process of the 3-year-old Indian-born girl.

"The evidence is still unfolding in this case. We think that we have a great case, we plan to pursue this case vigorously, and we don't want anything to hamper it in any kind of way", Johnson was quoted as saying.

Johnson says they haven't decided if they will seek the death penalty for Wesley Mathews. Wesley Mathews, who was arrested soon after after he changed his story about his adopted daughter Sherin Mathews' disappearance, was initially charged with injury to a child.

The attorneys for Sini Mathews tell NewsFix, "The indictments handed down today by a Dallas County Grand Jury confirm what we have previously stated".
