IL police officer saves child running along busy road

In dashcam footage of the rescue, Mannino is seen running after the child before carrying it back to his cruiser.

CBS 2, a Chicago television station, spoke with the officer.

The dashcam footage shows Sgt. Anthony Mannino stop his patrol vehicle on the right side of a busy highway, just behind where the young boy is running.

According to a Naperville police spokesman, the boy ran out of his mother's home when she wasn't looking.

"We attribute that to Sgt. Mannino's observation while on patrol and quick reaction, placing his squad vehicle and himself between the child and traffic", said the department on Facebook. The Naperville, Illinois Police Department awarded Mannino for his life-saving actions.

The child wasn't injured.

Mannino told WBBM-TV that he at first thought he spotted a stray dog, but then his parental instincts took over. "I just wanted to get to him quickly and make sure he had no opportunity to move".

The police department says Mannino last week received its lifesaving award for his efforts.
