"The i30 Fastback is the newest in our range, bringing a unique new approach to this popular segment", COO of Hyundai Europe, Thomas Schmid, said.

According to Hyundai, the i30 Fastback is the first five-door coupe in the small vehicle segment, though in reality the Korean company has simply revisited the liftback school of design made popular by Japanese hatches in the 80s and 90s.

"The Hyundai i30 N has been developed for no other goal than to deliver maximum driving fun to our customers in an accessible high-performance package", says Albert Biermann, executive vice president Performance Development and High Performance Vehicle Division. On the whole, there are plenty of motor manufacturers and their bosses more prone to controversial remarks and statements than Hyundai.

Hyundai was recently in the news for the performance-oriented i30N hatchback, and now, the South Korean carmaker has revealed the i30 fastback, which will soon go on sale as a five-door version. The fastback profile is more prominent when viewed from the side.

The designers explained they wanted to give the auto a more dynamic look than the hatchback and wagon: "The i30 Fastback is a real game-changer", claimed Hyundai Europe's chief designer, Thomas Burkle.

On the design front, there are some changes to exterior and interior in the form of new front bumper, front grille design with red inserts and twin exhaust system with new gloss black spoiler. "As an option, the company is also offering the i30 N with 8" display with built in satellite navigation while in terms of safety features, the i30 N gets autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist and driver monitoring system.

Customers can chose between the 1.4 T-GDI turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 140 PS or the 1.0 T-GDI turbocharged three-cylinder engine with 120 PS. The Fastback will be offered with a standard manual gearbox and an optional dual-clutch transmission. A 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol with 118 BHP is the smallest powerplant on offer, while a 1.4-litre turbo petrol with 138 BHP is also available.
