Hoyer responds to Cousins-49ers rumors on ESPN

Cousins and 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan are very fond of one another and Shanahan even compared his rookie quarterback C.J. Beathard, a third-round draft pick out of Iowa, to the veteran quarterback. "Kirk has made it clear that he prefers to play on a year-to-year basis", Allen said. While we would've like to work out a long-term contract before this season, we accept his decision. I was nearly worn out, if you will, before the season started, because I had pushed so hard to be top of my game in OTA one, and training camp practice one, and preseason game one.

"It's a fluid and murky quarterback situation in Minnesota, where Teddy Bridgewater's health remains a mystery and Sam Bradford only has one year left on his contract".

According to a statement made by Bruce Allen, via NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Allen confirmed that the Redskins had in fact offered Cousins the most guaranteed money for a quarterback in NFL history. In the process, Cousins made some contractual #NFL history.

With this weekend's negotiations in the books, both camps turn their attention to the future. Plus, that total is slightly more than the average of Norman's entire deal.

Cousins passed for a career-high 4,917 yards last season and had 25 touchdown passes to 12 interceptions for the Redskins.

We don't know how close the two sides ever came to getting a deal done this year, and we may never know. Alternately, the Redskins could use the NFL's transition tag, paying Cousins $28.73 million in 2018, but still risk losing him because other National Football League teams are free to match the offer.

Within the transition tag is a player option to sign a one-year deal for a 20 percent raise with his original team.

Only the first two years of the contract offer were really guaranteed, Pelissero added.

The transition tag is another possibility. If he does not end up back in Washington, the most likely destination for Cousins might be the San Francisco 49ers. The Redskins' starting quarterback will make $23.9 million this upcoming season because of the franchise tag.

2016 salary: $853,147 in final year of original four-year contract with $1.2 million salary-cap hit.
