Health department encourages residents to get vaccinated

"We urge everyone in Perry County who has not received a flu shot yet to get one now, and this event is a great time to do it".

In a press release, Florida DOH says the clinic will allow people to "roll in" and receive a flu shot, all while staying in their vehicle. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) established National Influenza Immunization Week (NIVW) in 2005 to highlight the importance of continued vaccination through the busy holiday season and into the new year when flu activity is typically at its peak. However, you can pass the flu to someone roughly a day before you start experiencing those symptoms, and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone over the age of 6 months.

Flu shots are available seven days a week, with no appointment necessary at CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations nationwide, including locations inside select Target stores.

Although anyone can get the flu, some people are at higher risk of flu-related complications, such as pneumonia, hospitalization and death.

Getting vaccinated is the first and most important step in protecting you and those around you against flu viruses. "Anyone can get the flu, including healthy individuals, and getting the flu vaccine is the easiest and safest way to protect yourself, your friends and your family this season".

Remember that antiviral medications are a second-line defense against the flu.

Because it is a preventative measure, the vaccine should be free under most health insurance plans. Antibodies that provide protection develop in the body about two weeks after vaccination.

The New Jersey Department of Health urged residents on Monday to get their annual flu vaccine. Flu symptoms may include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches and fatigue.
