The spokesman said: "A major police operation is underway".
The police confirmation comes after two people were injured and a further two people were treated in hospital following the attack which occurred late on Thursday evening.
Trelleborg has been placed on lockdown by armed cops with reports that at least four people suffered gunshot wounds.
Police in southern Sweden said that the event, which took place in the small town known for past gang violence, is not being investigated as terrorism.
Multiple casualties have been reported after the man started shooting people in the heart of Trelleborg, in the south of the country at around 11.30pm local time. The men were between the ages of 18 and 25.
Authorities are believed to be interviewing witnesses.
Police did not specify whether the suspect was in custody. There are several people who have encountered injuries.
"We are blocking certain areas and will conduct a technical survey", Bratt said.
'I do not have any more information at this time.
Trelleborg is a town home to nearly 30,000 inhabitants in the far south of Sweden.
