FFA backs move to award 2026 World Cup to USA-Canada-Mexico

Forty-eight teams will compete in 80 games - 60 of them will be played in 10 US cities, while Canada and Mexico will each host 10.

The joint bid of the US, Canada and Mexico received 134 votes at the FIFA Congress held in Moscow on Wednesday, while Morocco's bid got only 65. It will be the first time since 1994 that the US will have hosted the monthlong soccer extravaganza, and will come two years before Los Angeles welcomes back the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Mexico and Canada will have three host cities apiece, while the U.S. have submitted a list of 17 host cities. The winning bid listed 17 USA cities, including L.A., San Francisco, Atlanta, Miami and Philadelphia, as potential match sites; organizers will select 10 of those. Jacksonville was named among the initial candidates to host games in the 80-game competition, but the city was cut from the candidate list in October 2017.
