A Northern California dad is being held on more than $5 million bail and his wife vehemently denies claims of child abuse after police say they rescued the couple's 10 children from a life of squalor and physical abuse.
The children's father, Jonathan Allen, was arraigned Monday on felony torture and child abuse charges and the mother, Ina Rogers, faces child neglect charges.
The matter unfolded March 31 when the oldest child, a 12-year-old boy described as developmentally delayed with the capacity of an 8-year-old, disappeared from his house in the 2000 block of Fieldstone Court.
Rogers, who works as a medical technician, said she homeschools the children. Rogers herself has been arrested for child endangerment but is out on bail.
The 10 children were found in a home in Fairfield, Calif., due to an investigation that began in late March after a report of a missing juvenile in the area.
The children's mother told reporters that police have the wrong idea and that she tore apart her own house looking for her missing 12-year-old son, ABC station KGO reported. "I strive and I thrive on being a good parent to my children", said Ina Rogers, the accused mother.
In addition, according to police, they lived in "unsafe and unsanitary conditions" - all in one room, among the debris, spoiled food, and animal and human feces.
"The children described incidents of intentional abuse resulting in puncture wounds, burns, bruising and injuries consistent with being shot by a pellet or airsoft gun", said Lt. Greg Hurlbut, according to ABC7.
"So objects were obviously moved while conducting that search but that was not the basis for the charges regarding the environment the children were in though", Hurlbut said.
First arrested Rogers. Jonathan Allen, who is the father of most children was also arrested, charged with nine counts, including torture with brutality. Three she had before meeting Allen and eight more in the past 10 years. I am an incredible mother.
"She was pretty concerned, and she was like, you know, running around the neighborhood", Magney said, adding that he was "shocked" to learn that 10 children were living in the house, the Chronicle reported.
Sharon Henry, chief deputy district attorney for Solano County, said she was horrified by their statements, saying the torture was for sadistic purposes.
"There's no broken bones, there is no major scars, nothing", Rogers told reporters in front of her house. The 10 children were taken to live with other family members.
As for the home's appalling appearance, Mrs. Rogers stated that it's hard to keep everything neat and tidy with ten kids around, several cats, a dog, and, a goldfish on top. He had been angry because Allen and Rogers had tried to take away his tablet computer, Rogers said, according to the AP.
