Dozens hurt as plane encounters heavy turbulence on flight to US

A Turkish Airlines flight encountered severe turbulence near the end of its 10-hours flight journey from Istanbul to New York City, resulting in 29 passengers, including one flight attendant to suffer injuries.

An global flight to JFK Airport experienced "extreme turbulence" Saturday, leading to injuries among the plane's passengers and crew.

"About 45 minutes prior to its landing at JFK, Turkish Airlines Flight 001 hit some severe turbulence", Coleman said.

The plane landed at 5:35 p.m. and stopped at Terminal 1. No further information on the accident was available.

Other area pilots had noted turbulence as well, and pilots at nearby Newark Airport were warning passengers to prepare for turbulence on flights about to depart.

"The majority of them were bumps, bruises and cuts", he said. Two people were taken to Queens Hospital Medical Center.

A flight operating between Istanbul-New York experienced unusual turbulence on Saturday injuring 30 people onboard.

At least 29 people were injured, including a flight attendant who suffered a broken leg, after their plane travelling from Istanbul to NY was hit by severe turbulence. The crew reported the injuries and declared an emergency while still in the air, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. EMS and Port Authority emergency personnel were on the scene.

It was the second mishap involving a plane in the NY metropolitan area.
