Donald Trump Jr.'s leaked private messages to WikiLeaks, explained

According to a report in The Atlantic, the WikiLeaks Twitter account sent a series of direct messages to Donald Trump Jr, who is the son of President Donald Trump.

Donald Trump Jr. did not respond to numerous notes, which were sent using the direct message feature on Twitter.

The U.S. intelligence community earlier this year stated with "high confidence" that members of Russia's military intelligence service hacked the Democratic emails and then gave them to WikiLeaks.

During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly cited WikiLeaks' release of stolen emails from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta.

Trump Jr's lawyers said they handed over copies of the conversation to investigators in the Senate who were busy trying to establish the extent to which Russian Federation attempted to meddle in the elections.

Trump Jr.'s lawyer, Alan Futerfas, said in a statement Monday that while the communications provided to Congress "under the promise of confidentiality" were leaked, "we can say with confidence that we have no concerns about these documents and any questions raised about them have been easily answered in the appropriate forum".

The "About" page on the site lists Glaser as the benefactor, as of an archive captured 6 days after Wikileak's message to Trump Jr. Goldstone tells Trump Jr. that the Russians have derogatory information on Clinton that would be "very useful to your father". "It's awesome what she can get away with". Trump Jr. tweeted that link two days later, on October 14, 2016, The Atlantic noted. Like this one in December to make Assange the Australian ambassador to the United States.

Meanwhile, WikiLeaks continued to DM him, at one point asking him to leak them Trump Sr.'s tax returns to help the group "improve the perception of our impartiality", suggesting that Trump not concede the election if he loses, and after the election making the odd suggestion that the he should "suggest that Australia appoint Assange ambassador" to the US. Trump Jr. then released them himself. The fact that so many on the campaign, including Don Jr., knew about this certainly makes it hard to believe Trump himself didn't also know.

Vice President Mike Pence responded quickly to the revelations, issuing a statement through his press secretary that he knew nothing about the situation.

Glaser has continued to follow the story as well, publishing a Medium blog post earlier this week - just before The Atlantic's piece - about Robert Mueller's probe of the relationship between Russian Federation and Trump.

"I can not confirm the alleged DM's from DonaldJTrumpJR to WikiLeaks", he tweeted.

On Tuesday, former WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson said he never met anyone in the Trump campaign.

The newly revealed exchanges provide additional information about the role played by Trump jnr in 2016. "WikiLeaks does not keep such records and the Atlantic's presentation is edited and clearly does not have the full context". Even if you believe that, it can no longer be said that there was no behind-the-scenes coordination (i.e. collusion) between the top level of the Trump campaign and the most prominent Russian "cut-out", WikiLeaks.

"There seems to be no reasonable explanation for these messages", Blumenthal said.

The leaked Twitter exchanges are likely to increase calls for Mt Trump testify publicly in front of the various committees. But negotiations over witnesses broke down last month amid disagreements with Democrats on the panel.
