Denis Shapovalov's inspiring Rogers Cup run won't soon be forgotten

Federer served nine aces and hit 28 winners to improve to 35-2 on the season. He has an ATP Tour high five titles in 2017.

Despite loosing out on a chance to compete for the cup, the string of victories boosted his world-ranking to 66th and has earned him some $220,760 in prize money. He would need to win here and have an equal or better finish than Rafael Nadal at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati next week to become the World No.1 on August 21.

It was the second meeting between Canadian Peter Polansky and Federer with the latter coming on top at the 2014 Rogers Cup, 6-2, 6-0.

Unlike the match against Ferrer, in which he made a lot of unforced errors before managing a 4-6,6-4, 6-2 win, Federer was in complete control while decimating Agut.

We'll see how good Zverev can be when he takes to centre court on Sunday to face off against a legend of the sport in Roger Federer - a man who has won 19 Grand Slams and who has cruised through this tournament as part of the best start to a season he's had in 11 years. Just to get back to number one once again in your career is a big deal, especially later in your life.

The 18-year-old left-hander, now from Richmond Hill, Ontario beat 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro in the second round and then knocked off the top-seeded Nadal in a third-set tiebreaker in the round of 16.

"But, you know, I played in five finals this year". He went on to hold and take the first set 6-4. Third seed Dominic Thiem of Austria lost to Argentina's Diego Schwartzman 6-4, 6-7 (7), 7-5 while last year's finalist and fifth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan, lost 6-7 (4), 7-6 (7), 7-5 to Gael Monfils.

The talented German most recently met Federer in the Halle Open final in June and was thoroughly outclassed and will need to be at his absolute best if he wants to equal the former world number one's title tally. Ferrer defeated 15th seeded American hotshot Jack Sock, 7-6 (7), 3-6, 6-1.

Roger Federer maintained his superb run of form with a straight-set win over Dutchman Robin Haase in the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup.
