Couple jailed for raping, selling son

The regional court in Freiburg sentenced the boy's mother to 12½ years in prison.

A German mother and her partner will spend more than a decade in jail after admitting to repeatedly sexually abusing the woman's now 10-year-old son and selling him on the "dark net" to pedophiles.

The twisted pair and six others were part of a pedophile ring that was busted a year ago following an anonymous tip.

Five other men have also been prosecuted in connection with the abuse.

In Tuesday's verdict, the couple was ordered to pay a total 42,500 euros ($49,100) in compensation to the boy and another victim, a young girl.

The case only came to light following an anonymous tip in September 2017.

The pair have only been identified by the pseudonyms Berrin T and Christian L in line with German privacy rules. Taha, 48, said she would not appeal Their sentences fell short of prosecutors' demands: 14 years, six months for Taha; and 13 years; six months for Lais.

A German couple was tossed behind bars for 12 years Tuesday for selling custom-made online videos of them sexually abusing their son.

The trial has also raised concerns that officials might sometimes wrongly presume that a woman is incapable of abusing her own child.

A Spanish citizen was handed 10-years of imprisonment following his admission to raping the boy on 15 different occasions after paying the couple over 10,000 Euros. The mom said she went along with the abuse at first out of fear of losing her boyfriend - then later for "financial motives", the judge said.

The boy was taken out of the family home in March a year ago, but was sent back weeks later by a local court.

The boy is now living with foster parents.

According to case psychiatrist Hartmut Pleines, quoted by Spiegel, the mother's claim that she was in thrall to her partner when she committed the abuse was false.
