Chandigarh stalking case: Vikas Barala, Ashish Kumar sent to judicial custody

Amid tight police security, both were presented before the court of duty magistrate Gaurav Dutta. Surya Parkash, the defence counsel for the two accused, said that he could talk to the two for a few minutes.

The police had summoned Vikas and Ashish on August 9 for further questioning.

The duo had been earlier remanded in police custody for two days till August 12.

Haryana BJP President Subhash Barala's son Vikas Barala and his friend Ashish Kumar were on Thursday remanded in two-day police custody by a court here in an attempted abduction and stalking case involving an IAS officer's daughter.

There was a massive outrage on streets and in the Parliament regarding the stalking incident, with the Congress accusing the ruling party of protecting the accused. He further said that the Barala family has told him to let the law take its own course.

On Friday night, several people in Chandigarh held a march "Bekhauf Azaadi" in support of the victim, and to raise awareness on the women safety issue. The police had arrested the duo, after charges of attempt to kidnap were slapped against them.

However, following media pressure, the police later arrested them again after charging them with non-bailable sections of attempt to abduction (section 365 and 511 of the Indian Penal Code).

In the aftermath of Varnika Kundu's stalking by Haryana state BJP chief Subhash Barala's son, scores of women here took out a protest march late in the night to drive home the message they were "free to move around at any time". However, both of them were granted bail the same day. He assured action against his son.
