Brees breaks NFL's all-time passing yards record

After Brees connected on the record throw, he was mobbed by teammates and the game was briefly halted to acknowledge the historic moment. The two teams will play November 4 in the next game at the Superdome. 59,392 of Brees' yards have come since joining the Saints in 2006.

Brees, who finished 26 of 29 for 363 yards with three touchdowns (he's now just one shy of 500 for his 18-year career), showed how potent the Saints can be when they have their full complement of weapons. Brees retrieved the ball from Smith and then handed it to David Baker, president of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

On a more serious note, Manning said Brees broke the record "the right way". Brees has passed for more than 59,000 yards and more than 400 TDs in 12-plus seasons for New Orleans, smashing every meaningful Saints passing record while helping long-frustrated franchise win its first Super Bowl in 2010 and go to the playoffs six times.

"He deserves it. It's been an unbelievable run", Payton said.

Retired NFL quarterback Peyton Manning may have lost a significant NFL passing record to Drew Brees, but he did not lose his sense of humor. Ingram also had two catches for 20 yards in his first game of 2018, following a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's performance enhancing drug policy.

The game featured other touches meant to honor Brees.
