BJP-led NDA picks Venkaiah Naidu as Vice Presidential candidate

While many are speaking of Naidu being the BJP's candidate, the man himself has rejected it. He has hands full of experience in various departments and he essayed various roles all these years BJP was in power.

Hailing from Andhra Pradesh, Venkaiah Naidu came to spotlight during the Jai Andhra movement. "Mr Naidu will file his nomination tomorrow for the August 5 election". The latest news we hear is that Venkaiah Naidu is now being considered for Vice-President and the ultimate decision is in the hands of BJP. Both the elections take place through secret ballot and electors are not bound by any whip. A student of law in college, Naidu, if elected, will be the second BJP leader, after Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, to occupy the post of the vice president. He is now the Information and Broadcasting Minister in the Narendra Modi government. This is the only barrier for Venkaiah Naidu informs a source from the BJP office. He even had written to the President. "I am happy being Usha's pati (wife Usha's husband)", he said in May.

Names of Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao and O Rajagopal had also been doing the rounds as probables. Mr. Naidu, 68 and a former BJP President, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sources said.

Naidu's victory seems to be a foregone conclusion as he has a clear lead over Opposition nominee Gopal Krishna Gandhi in an electoral college consisting of 790 parliamentarians.

Even for the next elections, too, Naidu is banking on Venkaiah for continuing the alliance with the BJP, since he knows without the BJP support, the TDP can not win the elections on its own.
