Rory MacDonald defeated Paul Daley by submission in the second round to win the main event. The 27-year-old fell short in his quest for UFC gold against Robbie Lawler, then dropped a five-round decision against Stephen Thompson in his most recent outing.
MacDonald (19-4) earned his first win in over two years and earned a shot at the victor of the welterweight title fight between champion Douglas Lima and Lorenz Larkin at Bellator NYC on June 24 from Madison Square Garden. The second round played out pretty much the same way, but this time, Macdonald went in for the kill. He took Daley down, worked the ground and pound, and controlled from top to take the first round. MacDonald locked on a rear-naked choke and Daley quickly tapped out. The company put on a hell of a show, delivering four finishes on the main card, with Cheick Kongo's points victory being the exception, but I predicted that one anyway in preview/prediction piece.
With the win, MacDonald is expected to face the victor between champion Douglas Lima and Lorenz Larkin in his next outing. When asked by Smith who he wanted to win the bout, MacDonald made a bold statement.
