Australian MP Tim Wilson proposes during same-sex marriage debate

Deputy speaker Rob Mitchell said the "resounding yes" should be recorded in the notes, before offering his congratulations to Mr Wilson.

'You have had to tolerate more than most because you had to put up with me... trust me, ' he said between tears.

LCA president Fiona McLeod SC said the bill, now being debated in the lower house, deserved swift passage. The moment, which was captured on video, occurred shortly after the country's same-sex marriage bill was introduced to the House of Representatives.

Wilson's 33-year-old partner Ryan Bolger was watching him deliver the speech from the public gallery. We both know this issue isn't the reason we got involved in politics.

"So there's only one thing left to do", Wilson said.

In fact, Wilson's proposal made history as he was the first member of the Australian parliament to propose in the chamber.

According to local reports, Wilson and Bolger have actually been unofficially engaged for the last nine years, so this was a reaffirmation of their intention to Wednesday, now that the possibility of that occurring is finally in sight. The Senate last week approved the bill and rejected all proposed amendments that would have increased legal protections for those who would discriminate against gay couples on religious grounds.

The MP also described people's reactions when he first told them about the relationship years ago.

'Always with an eye to the future, the Member for Kooyong [Josh Frydenberg] and his wife Amy sent flowers, ' Wilson said.

We hope Wilson and Bolger will now throw an absolutely massive party to celebrate in style.
