More than 50 people died in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district, while 18 more died at the Meerut Medical College, the IANS news agency reported.
"However, in the remaining cases unless the viscera report is not available, it is hard for doctors to ascertain clearly that the deaths were caused due to alcohol", A K Pandey, district magistrate Saharanpur said Saturday.

Eight people also died in the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh in an unconnected tragedy in a village in the district of Kushinagar.
"We can't give you the exact death toll as post-mortems are awaited in many cases", a senior official in Uttar Pradesh told Xinhua. Police officials said viscera examination on more bodies was yet to be conducted to find out if these too were alcohol-related deaths.
Twenty-two people were admitted to hospitals in Saharanpur but were in stable condition, Pandey said. They have seized hundreds of liters of so-called country-made liquor.
Later Saturday, authorities in both states announced compensation of $2,800 each to the relatives of those killed.
Officials in Uttar Pradesh could not be reached for latest casualty figures on Monday, but at least 69 people have died in the state, according to newspapers Indian Express and Times of India.
Producers often mix liquor with cheap chemicals to increase potency and profit. Deaths as a result of consuming such alcohol are in the headlines regularly.
Saharanpur police said the liquor was first consumed in neighboring Uttarakhand where villagers from Saharanpur has gone to attend a funeral.
