Video from the first floor of the house was used extensively in bringing the initial charges, but the basement is where the majority of the drinking occurred the night of February 2 and early morning of February 3, according to court documents and testimony.
New charges were announced on Monday against 17 former Penn State fraternity brothers in connection with video footage from the night of pledge Tim Piazza's fatal fall earlier this year.
The District Attorney says law enforcement was led to believe the cameras had been inoperable on Bid Acceptance Night.
A court affidavit said one of the brothers, Braxton Becker, purposely deleted the basement footage two days after Piazza died but the Federal Bureau of Investigation was able to recover it.
According to Parks Miller, the basement video clearly shows a continuation of the hazing activity previously captured upstairs during the gauntlet.
Timothy Piazza did not get his own drink at any point, they said, but based on the video, he was given at least 18 drinks in less than an hour and a half.
New charges were brought on Monday against 12 defendants who previously had not been charged, and additional counts were brought against five who already were facing charges.
Of the 12 new brothers now facing multiple charges, five are facing charges that include involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault.
The basement party and Piazza's 18 drinks came after pledges underwent an alcohol chugging obstacle course upstairs known as "the gauntlet". Two counts of hazing, two counts of furnishing alcohol to minors and two counts of unlawful acts relative to liquor. "We all have proof of what happened on tape".
"It's time to man up fellas and be held accountable for your actions", Piazza said.
With his wife by his side, Jim Piazza said this will be the first holiday season the family has spent without their son.
Bohan Song, who also was charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor, and three counts each of hazing, furnishing and unlawful acts.
Joshua Kurczewski, who also was charged with ten counts of hazing, eight counts of furnishing alcohol to minors and eight unlawful acts relative to liquor. The fraternity members seen serving Tim Piazza specifically, were charged with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering.
The judge has allowed the lesser charges to stand, including hazing and providing alcohol to minors.
Luke Visser faces 11 new counts of furnishing alcohol to minors and 11 counts of unlawful acts.
Mike Fernandez, who was charged with two counts each of hazing, furnishing and unlawful acts.
His death prompted calls to change Greek culture and stop hazing and alcohol abuse on campuses nationally, and drove an attempt to overhaul fraternity rules at the flagship state campus, which banned the chapter and implemented stricter rules on parties and greater oversight of the social groups. If you did not commit the acts you did, we would not be here today and we would anxiously be awaiting Tim's return home for Thanksgiving break on Friday.
