When Sidney Bouvier Gilstrap-Portley chose to have his own fast times at Hillcrest High School in Dallas, he got no such permission from the administration, and simply claimed to be a 17-year-old Hurricane Harvey refugee in order to join the basketball team.
Sidney Gilstrap Portley was enrolled in two Dallas high schools for nearly nine months, claiming to be a Hurricane Harvey refugee. He was allowed to register because federal law doesn't require people who are homeless because of a natural disaster to have documents they might not have, NBCDFW.com reported.
Gilstrap-Portley was named the offensive player of the year in his district, and was apparently convincing enough to fool Dallas ISD superintendent Michael Hinojosa.
Dallas Independent School District spokeswoman Robyn Harris said they believe his "primary motivation" for using Hurricane Harvey to get enrolled was basketball, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Gilstrap-Portley's deception was finally revealed when one of his former coaches from North Mesquite High School recognized him during a tournament in April. Authorities say the supposedly 17-year-old was actually 25-year-old Sidney Gilstrap-Portley, eager for another shot at athletic glory.
The woman said she only spoke to Gilstrap-Portley, known to her as Rashun Richardson, once over the phone.
The woman said she only learned about the new accusation when a detective called her on Monday. I don't know how a 25-year-old playing high school basketball doesn't look like LeBron.
He was booked into Dallas County Jail, charged with tampering with government records Friday and has since bonded out.
This mother said her daughter told her that the two had kissed and he had touched her "inappropriately".
DISD officials say Gilstrap-Portley gained access to schools at a time when the district had opened its doors to hurricane evacuees.
"Unfortunately this was a ideal storm", said Dr. Michael Hinojosa, DISD superintendent.
An attorney wasn't listed for Gilstrap-Portley in online records as of Wednesday.
Dallas ISD Police are looking into allegations that Gilstrap-Portley may have had a romantic relationship with a student.
Thank you for your continued support of Hillcrest High School.
